Advice On Buying The Right Skiing Clothes

Friday, July 1st, 2011

Skiing is a popular past time – especially on winter holidays – but it can be daunting to know what equipment and clothing to buy for the first time. Ski clothing tends to be split into three layers. When preparing your upper body, you should begin with a thermal body shirt which will help transfer moisture from your body to the next layer of clothing – a fleece jacket or sweater. This will do the majority of the work in keeping you warm and will also offer added protection.

Just as with your upper body, your legs need protection from accidents and injuries as well as the harsh winter elements. Thermal trousers will provide protection and transfer moisture, as with the thermal body shirt. A pair of padded ski trousers will keep you dry and warm and adds an extra layer of physical protection. This can be vital in beating the cold and preventing injury, so don’t compromise on quality and please ensure you buy proper skiing trousers.

It’s not only your legs that need to be kept warm and dry. Your feet are the extremities of your body and will be what gets coldest first. You will need thick skiing or snowboarding socks, designed for ultimate warmth and padded protection. It is vital that your feet remain warm and dry at all times. On top of your socks, you’ll need a pair of ski boots. Your ski boots will be specialized forms of footwear which connect to your skis through ski bindings.

It is vital that your head is protected at all times. Experienced skiers can wear a ski hat or beanie for warmth but novice skiers should always wear a ski helmet to protect their head from accident or injury. Ski goggles will protect your eyes, too, from debris and the sun’s rays. Your torso should be covered with a waterproof ski jacket and your hands protected with padded ski gloves. Without adequate protection, you leave yourself prone to injury.

So, you’ve got all the gear and you’re kitted out to go skiing. Aren’t you forgetting something? You’ll need some skis. Make sure your skis suit the type of skiing you’ll be doing. Alpine skis won’t be any use for telemark skiing, for example. Ensure your skis are suitable for your skill level and that the type and style of skis are suitable for you and you’ll be hitting the slopes in no time at all. Happy skiing!
